Frequently asked questions

  1. Your reservation must be received by Visit Mechelen14 days before your visit at the latest.Requests 13 to 7 days before your visit are limited to the Burgundian city walk only and are subject to availability of our guides.

  2. After booking, you will receive a confirmation. Only then your reservation is definitive.
  3. Payment is due  no later than 7 days before your visit. After receipt of payment, we will send you the necessary vouchers. An administration cost of € 5 will be charged for each booking.

    Needa a guide at shorter notice? Please let us know via ‘Contact’ and we will do our utmost for you and your group to organise an unforgettable tour rapidly.

Changes in the program or the number of participants can only be communicated to Visit Mechelen in written form. This may be an e-mail or letter. In order to avoid unnecessary administration, the definitive number of participants must be communicated just before the payment.

Alterations are possible until 7 days before the visit.

If the price or program changes due to changes, you will receive a new confirmation. Changes less than 7 days before the visit are not allowed.

An uninterrupted tour of maximum 2 hours costs € 85. Shorter tours can be booked at the same rate. For longer tours with a city guide an extra € 33 per hourwill be charged.

The total amount must be paid 7 days before the day of the visit at the latest.

There is no minimal number of persons. However, the maximum is 25 persons per guide, unless otherwise stated on the website.

Our guides wear a blue badge with the Stadsgidsen Mechelen logo. They wait for you at the Aldermen’s House (Schepenhuis) or any other agreed place. You will find the meeting point on your confirmation. The guide waits a maximum of 30 minutes for you.

Our guides speak English, Dutch, French, Germanand Spanish. And “Mechels” of course.

Give us a call (the number is on your confirmation) to let us know that you’re a bit late. We will wait for you, with a maximum of half an hour. If you don’t show up or don’t notify us, we reserve the right to cancel the guided tour or walk. In these cases, the booking will not be reimbursed.

Please note that each guided tour or walk has an end hour. If you are late and the walk ends late, an extra hour will be charged.

 

All cancellations of an entire case must be notified by e-mail or letter to Visit Mechelen. Up to 7 days before your visit, cancellation is free of charge. After that, until 3 days before your visit, you pay 10% of the total amount. Cancellations within 3 days before your visit must be paid if full.

There are two pick-up and drop-off points in the city center where coaches are allowed to stop for 15 minutes.

Veemarkt(at 450 meters walking distance from the Schepenhuis) is reachable via Keizerstraat. After dropping off the passengers the coach can leave the center via Merodestraat.

Wollemarkt(at 250 meters walking distance from Schepenhuis) is reachable via Sint-Katelijnestraat en Sint-Romboutskerkhof. After dropping off the passengers the coach can leave the center via Goswin de Stassartstraat.

Coaches can park free of charge at the Douaneplein.

 

All buildings, except the Town Hall (Stadhuis), Saint-Rumbold's Tower and Carillon School (Beiaardschool), are wheelchair friendly. We advise you to obtain information beforehand when you plan a visit.

It is always possible that a building, church, park or garden cannot be visited, due to exceptional circumstances. Stadsgidsen Mechelen will provide a worthy alternative.

  1. By train

    Mechelen is easy to reach by train from almost any belgian and european city. Mechelen has two railway stations: Mechelen en Mechelen-Nekkerspoel.

    Both are at 10 to 15 minutes walking distance from the city center.

  2. By bus
     

    A shuttlebus (DE LIJN bus number 1 – Pendelbus) leaves at trainstation Mechelen and brings you in a just a few minutes to the Schepenhuis where most of our walks start. You can take the bus back tot he station at the same place.

    Note however that this shuttlebus does not drive on Saturday mornings due to the weekly market.

  3. By car

    Are you coming by car? Please take into account that a large part of the inner city is low-traffic-area between 11.00 am and 6.00 pm. You can park inexpensively on parkings at the edge of town. They are all within walking distance from the Grand Place (Grote Markt). From parkings Rode Kruisplein and Zandpoortvest you walk into the city center in no time. The parking at the Douaneplein is free of charge. This parking is 15 to 20 minutes walking distance from the Grand Place.

  4. Met de fiets
    Mechelen is a convenient and central location, also for bike travelers. The city lies along many waterways with their many cycle paths, along the well known cycle network and Vlaanderen Fietsroute. Bicycle Highway F1 from Antwerp to Brussels aslo passes through Mechelen. The historical city center can easily be reached by bike. The entire inner city is one big contiguous bicycle zone. 179 streets in the inner city are so-called bicycle streets where all motorized vehicles are not allowed to overtake cyclists.
